Erbil still hopeful to Iraqi league
Erbil FC moves to second place in Iraqi League after defeating Al-Sinaa 1-0
After defeating Baghdad's club Al-Sinaa on August 31 at home, Erbil Football Club's hope returned and its confidence is now high to play its final game in the league against Najaf on September 4. The Yellow Castle team won over Al-Sinaa 1-0, and moved to second place in the Iraqi league. It was a hard-fought battle against Al-Sinaa which, although it lost, put on a strong performance in the first half.
The match took place at the Franso Hariri Stadium with a large number of spectators. Erbil started poorly, with its passing, movement and general play seeming incoherent in the first 30 minutes. The game was hasty and lacked commitment. The Rival team looked most likely to score as its organized attacks created real threats on Sarhang Muhsin's goal.
Mahdi Kareem’s goal was enough for Erbil to win another three points and secure the second place in the league. The second place was secured by Erbil after the league top team, Shurta tied with Baghdad's giant club, AlZawraa 1-1 at the Shaab Stadium in the Iraqi capital city.
Erbil has played 33 matches in the Iraqi league so far and has 67 points, only two points behind the league leader Shurta that has held the top of the league with 69 points.
Although the league lasted for a very long time, this year’s teams appeared more completive. Only one game is left in the league but no one knows who is going to become champions of this season yet. Wednesday’s matches will be disclosing everything.
If Shurta wins the match against Al-Zawraa, it will automatically become the champions regardless what results of Erbil club will record. But if Shurta loses and Erbil wins over Najaf, Erbil will win the league title for the fifth time.
