Justice Minister calls for guaranteeing Kurdish rights in Iraq’s budget
Sherwan Haidari, Minister of Justice at the Kurdistan Regional Government argues that it is the region’s right to try to secure its financial independence to be able to serve its people in a better way.
He also added that Kurds should be given guarantees about their 17% share in the central government’s budget, the budget of the Minstry of Peshamarga and other financial benefits of the region according to the constitution.
In an interview with a local Kurdish daily newspaper, Minster Haidari commented on the visit by the KRg delegation headed by Prime Minster Nechirvan Barzani to Baghdad to discuss oil and budget issues. He stated that this is a very normal act and is completely ordinary in any federal country.
Haidari said that each federal region is entitled to fight for its financial independence, which is for serving the people of the region.
“Especially after the legislation of Law no. 5 of 2013 by the Kurdistan Parliament, which was the law for the financial benefits of Kurdistan Region in the central government revenues; this has become a legal responsibility of the KRG,” said Minister Haidari. “This is an expression of the will of the Kurdistani nation.”
According to the Justice Minister, his government’s responsibility now is to secure the legal and constitutional rights of Kurdistan Region and its people, “which constitute guaranteeing the 17% share of the budget, Ministry of Peshmarga budget as part of the Iraqi defense system, as well as sufficient funds to compensate the damages caused to the Kurds in the past years.”
