“Baghdad still to send 60% of last month’s funds” – Rashid Tahir
Rashid Tahir, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), states that the Iraqi central government has still sent only 40% of the KRG monthly budget for January 2014.
Tahir warned that any repetition this month would lead to major issues.
“All in all, 60% of the KRG’s January budget has not been sent by the central government,” the Deputy Finance Minister said.
Tahir claimed that other provinces were facing the same problem, but that its impact had been significant on the KRG.
Since the start of 2014, the lack of liquidity in Kurdistan’s banks has delayed the payment of government salaries. Till now there is no guarantee that this issue will not be repeated this month as well.
“What happened last month should not happen again,” warns Tahir. “If it does, it will lead to major problems.”
The delays in the distribution of government salaries has had a significant impact on the living conditions of many people and to a deterioration in the economic situation of the region as a whole.
Rashid Tahir also announced that the majority of government employees have now received their January salaries.
