The coach­ing staff of the Kur­dis­tan Foot­ball As­so­ci­a­tion (KFA) have named a 20-player squad to rep­re­sent Kur­dis­tan at the ConIFA World Foot­ball Cup which is ex­pected to be held in Oster­sund, Swe­den, in June 2014.

The play­ers named for the Kur­dis­tan squad are: Ah­mad Salar from Su­laimaniya FC; Khalid Mushir, Jas­sim Muham­mad Haji, Dlo­van Mahdi and You­nis Shukir from Zakho FC; Mi­ran Khasro, Hardi Siya­mand Farhan Shukir, Na­ri­man Khidir and Di­yar Rah­man from Er­bil FC; Nechir­van Shukri, Zuhair Ab­dul­ja­mal and Hozan Ismail from Zer­a­vani FC; Sarhang Muham­mad from Han­dren FC; Ali Aziz from Ararat FC; Ah­mad Ma­mun from Duhok FC; Shaho from Newroz FC; Sherzad Muham­mad from Hawler Pesh­marga; and Di­yar Yakh from Su­laimani Pesh­marga.

Ac­cord­ing to the coach­ing staff, these 20 play­ers were selected for the na­tional team on the ba­sis of their per­for­mance and the tech­niques they dis­played in the Kur­dis­tan league.

The draw for the tour­na­ment, which is for state­less peo­ples and na­tions and in­cludes play­ers from some of the world>s blood­i­est con­flicts, was held last Mon­day in North­ern Swe­den.

«These teams, which are not rec­og­nized by FIFA, have an in­cred­i­bly strong wish to play in­ter­na­tional foot­ball, and to raise the pro­file of their people, tra­di­tion and his­tory», said PerAn­ders Blind, the chair­man of ConIFA, an um­brella group for foot­ball teams out­side FIFA and the or­ga­nizer of the ConIFA World Foot­ball Cup.

Blind added, «We give them a place in the world, so that people rec­og­nize them in a com­pletely dif­fer­ent way».

The World Foot­ball Cup 2014 draw was con­ducted by Safin Kan­abi, the Kur­dis­tan Foot­ball As­so­ci­a­tion pres­i­dent, Hakan Kuo­rak of the Sapmi Foot­ball As­so­ci­a­tion, and Melke Alan, the pres­i­dent of the Arameans Sury­oye Foot­ball As­so­ci­a­tion.

Kur­dis­tan were drawn against Aramean Syr­iac and Tamilee­lam in Group 1. Group 2 in­cludes Sapmi, Selec­cion Oc­c­i­tana De Fot­bòl, and Abk­hazia, and Group 3 teams in­clude Pada­nia, Que­bec and Dar­fur United. Zanz­ibar is also due to play against Nagorno-Karabakh and El­lan Van­nin in Group 4. The first two teams from each group will ad­vance to the quar- ter fi­nals.

The ConIFA World Foot­ball Cup is an in­ter­na­tional foot­ball tour­na­ment or­ga­nized by ConIFA, an um­brella as­so­ci­a­tion for states, mi­nori­ties, state­less peo­ples and re­gions un­af­fil­i­ated with FIFA. The event is ex­pected to be held ev­ery two years.

To qual­ify for the tour­na­ment, teams must be drawn from re­gions or groups that are rec­og­nized by the Un­rep­re­sented Na­tions and Peo­ples Or­ga­ni­za­tion (UNPO) and have a strong in­ter­na­tional rank­ing in sim­i­lar tour­na­ments such as the 2012 VIVA World Cup, hosted by Kur­dis­tan in north­ern Iraq.

The event, which the or­ga­niz­ers said will be the largest nonFIFA foot­ball event in his­tory, kicks off on June 1, 2014.
