“It is a great honor for me to take part in an event where representatives from 200 countries along with the Head of the International Journalists Federation will be there,” said Hama Amin, who is the only one in Iraq to attend the Forum.

Concerning the subjects of the Forum and his role in it, Hama Amin noted “The main discussions and panels will be focusing on violations against journalists and Media Freedom Defenders. I will deliver a speech on freedom of speech, freedom of religion, security and national political aspirations.”

According to Hama Amin, several discourses will be held on the violations that are currently committed against journalists in the Middle East countries.

MFD Background

In December 2011, Center for Defending Freedom of Journalists (CDFJ) organized the first Forum for Media Freedom Defenders in the Arab world to address the role of media during the so-called “Arab Spring” and the impact of the “event” on media. A diverse group of individuals who defend the rights and responsibilities of media including journalists, humani- tarians, lawyers, government officials, and civil society representatives, among others, were gathered to discuss the controversial relationship between revolution and media, the accomplishments of media, and the future challenges that face media as a result of the popular uprisings.

3rd MFD Forum 2014

At this juncture, having executed two highly successful forums, CDFJ is seeking to expand, institutionalize, and achieve sustainability for the MFD Forum to serve as an annual, regional platform for major local and international civil society actors, journalists, activists, and academics to discuss issues surrounding media and the current affairs through activities that go beyond the usual discussions and networking. The 3rd MFD Forum will be the start of CDFJ's long term strategy to achieve this goal. And therefore, several activities and events will be organized beside the main MFD sessions.

The 3rd Forum seeks to achieve the following

Reviewing the status of the media after the "Arab Spring", discussing progress and failure, reviewing efforts exerted by the network of Media Freedom Defenders in the Arab world, announcement of the network’s second report- documenting and monitoring violations committed against media in the Arab countries in 2013 and discussing the future plans for the MFD Forum.

Also specialized workshops for journalists on legal protection and safety will be conducted. The Forum will focus on networking between Media Freedom Defenders and civil society organizations in defending media and honoring the organization.
