Open dis­cus­sion about law of right to ac­cess to in­for­ma­tion

For dis­cussing the law of Right to ac­cess to in­for­ma­tion in Kur­dis­tan Re­gion, Me­dia Academy in Iraq in co­op­er­a­tion with the Ger­man Gen­eral Con­sulate in Er­bil held an open dis­cus­sion in the Kur­dish cap­i­tal city on May 16, 2014.

Many people and jour­nal­ists from dif­fer­ent agencies at­tended in meet­ing in­clud­ing: sev­eral par­lia­ment mem­bers from the pre­vi­ous round, rep­re­sen­ta­tives of Kur­dis­tan Jour­nal­ists Syn­di­cate, head of Me­dia de­part­ments of sev­eral govern­ment agencies.

All the at­ten­dees were given chance to ex­press their opin­ion on the law and to make sug­ges­tions on how the law can be amended in to bet­ter.

“De­spite all the short­ages and is­sues, the law is a good achieve­ment for the jour­nal­ists it al­lows them to work legally and to get in­for­ma­tion eas­ier,” said Sar­war Ab­dur­rah­man, for­mer Kur­dis­tan par­lia­ment mem­ber and one of the com­mit­tee mem­bers who pre­pared the drafted law

The law was passed with the de­ci­sion (16) in 2013 by the pres­i­dent of Kur­dis­tan Re­gion. The law was passed so as to es­tab­lish the prin­ci­ples of trans­parency, pre­sent­ing ac­cu­rate in­for­ma­tion and giv­ing the right t people to ac­cess to in­for­ma­tion.
