Erbil Citadel is not rejected as a world heritage site
High Commission for Erbil Citadel Revitalization (HCECR) refutes the reports saying that the International Council on Monuments and Sites ICOMOS has reportedly rejected to add Erbil Citadel to the list of the world heritage sites due to some issues.
HCECR issued a statement in this regard which reads: “First of all we should know that ICOMOS is not the decision maker in this issue, but it rather is an independent advisory council for the UNESCO World Heritage Center ( UNESCOWHC), and any decision to add Erbil Citadel to the list of World Heritage Sites shall be made by the WHC rather than ICOMOS.”
The statement mentions that representatives from ECOMOS visited Erbil to monitor and evaluate the revitalization activi- ties and prepared a report about their observations in which they have mentioned some issues and concerns that should be considered by the HCECR and other relevant institutions in the Kurdistan Regional Government to meet the requirements of the WHC.
According to HCECR, there may not be a chance to have this decision taken by WHC in their next summit, which is planned for June, and it may well be postponed for a next summit.
“It is worth mentioning that ICOMOS talks positively about the performance of HCECR in their reports and also mentioned the continuous support of the KRG, and for that purpose has requested the KRG and HCECR to coordinate and concentrate their efforts in this regard.”
