President Barzani consults with the leaders of the political parties

All the political parties reiterated the need for the Peshmarga forces to stay in the disputed areas

The President of the Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani chaired a consultation meeting of all the Kurdistan political parties on 11 June to discuss the recent events which led to the fall of Mosul and various towns in the provinces of Salahaddin, Diyala and Kirkuk into the hands of the ISIS (The Islamic State in Iraq and Sham) as a result of the withdrawal of the Iraqi army and the security forces.

A statement following the meeting said that this situation is a result of a setback in the political process which in turn has led to a political system that is in stark contrast to the Constitution and consensus.

“Trust among the Iraqi political forces and national components must be restored anew, and a national initiative must be started to revive the political process by abandoning policies of marginalization, sectarianism and authoritarianism. Military solutions will lead Iraq to a more dangerous state and will threaten the whole country,” the statement read.

The participants of the meeting applauded the brave role of the Peshmarga forces in protecting the citizens in the affected areas. They condemned terrorism in all shapes and forms and reiterated that there will be no compromising with terrorist groups. They also reaf- firmed to continue to support the refugees from the war zones and called on the international community to assist the tens of thousands of refugees that have fled to the Kurdistan Region.

Mohammed Haji Mahmud, the General Secretary of the Kurdistan Social Democratic Party, who was one of the participants in the meeting said: “During the meeting all the participants agreed that President Barzani is the sole representative of the Kurdistan region in any future negotiation, and the final decision will be made by him.”

Mahmud also said that all the parties reiterated that Peshmarga should not withdraw from the areas that have recently been controlled by the Kurd- ish forces. After the Iraqi Army left Kirkuk and some other disputed areas, the Peshmarge forces took over and are now protecting the places and the people from any terrorist attacks by the ISIS.

Barzani's meeting with the party leaders came after a visit he made to Europe which included France and Italy. Barzani returned to Kurdistan last week. On his visit, the President met with the President Hollande in Paris, the Pope at the Vatican and senior Italian officials in Rome. Receiving refugees from Mosul and other areas after the eruption of the hostilities has been well appreciated by the European countries visited by Barzani.
