Massrour Barzani: We Need International Community’s Support to Counter Terrorism
Massrour Barzani, The President of the Kurdistan Region Security Agency, received a delegation from the All-Party Parliamentary Group of the UK House of Commons, headed by the ruling Conservative Party’s Tobias Ellwood, and accompanied by Lord Morris Glassman from the Labor Party, Leo Docherty, Head of the Middle East Committee of the ruling Conservative Party, and Gary Kent, the Administrator of the All-Party Parliamentary Group.
Barzani met with the visiting delegation and discussed the security situation in Mosul and Kirkuk Provinces of Iraq.
Barzani told the delegation that due to the recent assault by the fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS) on the Northern Iraqi Provinces, which are neighboring the Kurdistan Region, a huge security gap has been created in many areas in Iraq especially in the provinces bordering with Kurdistan. What aggravated the situation was the total collapse of the Iraqi security organizations which of course protected those areas from ISIS.
The Kurdish Security Official told the UK Parliament members that the “terrorists” are not only a threat for Iraq and Kurdistan, but they are also a big threat for all the Western and Middle Eastern countries, “hence we need support from the international community to counter terrorism.”
However, according to Barzani, such support should not be harmful to any Iraqi components.
During the meeting the Kurdish official explained the mechanisms used by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to counter the threats, protect the security of the Region and guaranteeing the lives of the citizens.
“Additionally the Kurdistan Region has served as a safe haven for hundreds of thousands of refugees from Syria and internally displaced people from other parts of Iraq,» concluded Mr. Massrour Barzani.
