President Barzani Meets UN High Commissioner for Refugees
Barzani: The door of the Kurdistan Region is open to all people who have been displaced and face adversities
The President of Kurdistan Region, Massoud Barzani, received the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Antonio Guterres and his delegates in Erbil on 17 July.
Guterres began the meeting by thanking the KRG and Barzani for their roles in aiding the thousands of refugees who have entered Kurdistan. He went on to declare that the UN is gratefully aware of the care the region has taken of those in need despite budget cuts from the central Iraqi government.
He stated that the UN is ready to help the Kurdistan Region by providing more help to the refugees in the region and mentioned that the kindness and generosity of the KRG and the Kurdish people must be acknowledged and appreciated worldwide.
Guterres commended the Kurdistan Region’s reputation as one of the most stable and secure places in the Middle East. He also added that other international organizations are optimistic about the future of the Kurdistan Region.
In response, Barzani pointed out that the Kurdistan Region is ready in all conditions to help refugees regardless of their religion or nationality. He men- tioned that what is important for the people of Kurdistan is the value of human beings and humanitarian beliefs. He mentioned that unfortunately these values have been violated by the unacceptable policies of the dictators.
President Barzani assured Guterres and his delegates that the door of the Kurdistan Region is always open for all people who have been displaced and face adversities.
Mosul events, terrorist threats, the Iraqi political process and the security situation in the country were other subjects of the meeting.
