Pres­i­dent Barzani Meets UN High Com­mis­sioner for Refugees

Barzani: The door of the Kur­dis­tan Re­gion is open to all peo­ple who have been dis­placed and face ad­ver­si­ties

The Pres­i­dent of Kur­dis­tan Re­gion, Mas­soud Barzani, re­ceived the UN High Com­mis­sioner for Refugees (UNHCR) An­to­nio Guter­res and his del­e­gates in Er­bil on 17 July.

Guter­res be­gan the meet­ing by thank­ing the KRG and Barzani for their roles in aid­ing the thou­sands of refugees who have en­tered Kur­dis­tan. He went on to de­clare that the UN is grate­fully aware of the care the re­gion has taken of those in need de­spite bud­get cuts from the cen­tral Iraqi govern­ment.

He stated that the UN is ready to help the Kur­dis­tan Re­gion by pro­vid­ing more help to the refugees in the re­gion and men­tioned that the kind­ness and gen­eros­ity of the KRG and the Kur­dish peo­ple must be ac­knowl­edged and ap­pre­ci­ated world­wide.

Guter­res com­mended the Kur­dis­tan Re­gion’s rep­u­ta­tion as one of the most sta­ble and se­cure places in the Mid­dle East. He also added that other in­ter­na­tional or­ga­ni­za­tions are op­ti­mistic about the fu­ture of the Kur­dis­tan Re­gion.

In re­sponse, Barzani pointed out that the Kur­dis­tan Re­gion is ready in all con­di­tions to help refugees re­gard­less of their re­li­gion or na­tion­al­ity. He men- tioned that what is im­por­tant for the peo­ple of Kur­dis­tan is the value of hu­man be­ings and hu­man­i­tar­ian be­liefs. He men­tioned that un­for­tu­nately these val­ues have been vi­o­lated by the un­ac­cept­able poli­cies of the dic­ta­tors.

Pres­i­dent Barzani as­sured Guter­res and his del­e­gates that the door of the Kur­dis­tan Re­gion is al­ways open for all peo­ple who have been dis­placed and face ad­ver­si­ties.

Mo­sul events, ter­ror­ist threats, the Iraqi po­lit­i­cal process and the se­cu­rity sit­u­a­tion in the coun­try were other sub­jects of the meet­ing.
