PM Barzani discusses IDP’S situation in Duhok
In a meeting with the Duhok Governor and administrative officials of the province on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, Kurdistan Regional Government’s ( KRG) Prime Minster Nechirvan Barzani was informed about the situation of the IDP who have fled from Sinjar and Nineva Plains to the governorate of Duhok.
Farhad Atrushi, Governor of Duhok briefed PM Barzani and his accompanying delegation, about the current situation of the IDP in his province, most of whom are Yezidi Kurds who have fled ISIS attacks on Sinjar as well as Christians and other ethnic and religious minorities from the Nineva Plains.
Governor Atrushi said that the province’s administrative body and its people immediately started to do their best to accommodate and help the IDP in their best; however, due to the huge number of IDP, they are still in need of a lot of help.
Rebaz Mohammed Hamlan, KRG Minister of Finance and Economy, who was accompanying Prime Minister Barzani to Duhok, said that till now KRG has been solely funding the aid process of the IDP, they have not received any external financial support for this matter.
Minister Hamlan also added that the $15 million fund that had been allocated to Duhok Province by a decision of PM Barzani has arrived on August 13th and can immediately be used.
Prime Minister Barzani promised the province’s authorities that the government will do its best to support them in helping the tens of thousands of IDP fled into the province in a short period of time.
Barzani also decided during the meeting to add another $10 million to the funds. He also promised to increase the funds more in the near future.
Barzani called for the immediate supply of the basic and urgent needs of the refugees and later to think of all their longerterm needs in the camps that will be constructed in several areas very soon.
The Kurdish Premier expressed his government’s gratitude towards all the people of the area and Kurdistan in general for the help and support they are offering to the IDP and described this as the highest level of humanitarian and patriotic act which is worth respect and gratitude.
Dr. Ali Sindi, Kurdish Planning Minister talked about the efforts of his ministry with the international organizations who are willing to provide aid to the IDP and stated that due to the size of the catastrophe and the extremely difficult situation of the IDP they have convinced many relevant international organizations and institutions to provide help to Kurdistan Region and the IDP at high levels.
Prime Minister Barzani concluded the meeting by telling the attendants about the most recent updates about the international support for the Region and said that with the arrival of arms and military support the Kurdish Peshmarga Forces will be able to defeat the Islamic State ISIS terrorists.
“What will be left is to heal the wounds that the terrorists have left in the hearts of the local people and the IDP, and this will need time, patience, and proper treatment.”
On the second day of the visit, the KRG delegation met with the representatives of the Yezidis, including Hazim Mir Tahsin Bag, son and representa- tive of the leader of the Yezidis in the world, Mir Tahsin Bag, Baba Sheikh, the leading religious man of Yezidis and a number of elderly and religious men of the Yezidi community.
During the meeting PM Barzani promised them that the government will be doing its best to support the Yezidi IDP.
He also vowed that they will win the war against terrorism first and then try to heal the wounds in the hearts of the Yezidis.
The PM Barzani explained the remote location of Sinjar to Kurdistan Region and the difficulty Peshmarga Forces find in liberating the area from the ISIS terrorists. He also said the imbalance between the weapons of the ISIS and those of Peshmargas which makes it more difficult for Peshmargas to liberate the area, and he also admitted that there has been mistakes and that this will be investigated and those responsible will be punished.
The Yezidi representatives expressed their gratitude for the efforts of the KRG and the Peshmargas for protecting their people and extending their helping hands to all the IDP and saving their lives from terrorism and harsh situations on Mount Sinjar. However, they also said that their people need more help and asked the government to provide more support and help to the people to return to their homes.
PM Barzani reiterated his government’s commitment to help the Yezidi IDP and vowed to liberate Sinjar from ISIS. He also said they are trying their best to bring the case of the Yezidis to the international arena and to work for a legal international recognition of this case as genocide.
