President Barzani receives French President in Erbil
Both presidents stressed on fighting against terrorism and the continuity of the global aids to help Peshmarga to fight Islamic State
The Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani received French President Francois Hollande on Friday. The visit was intended to express French support for the KRG in the fight against Islamic State (IS/ formerly ISIS). It was the first visit by a head of state since IS militants controlled large swaths of Iraq.
At a press conference that organized for both presidents, President Barzani announced that: “We are insisting on fighting against terrorism”, adding that: “Returning the internally displaced people to the place of their origin and taking necessary measures to do so are the main missions of all parties.”
Barzani further revealed that the logistic and military aids of France and other friendly countries have enhanced the morale of Peshmarga forces to confront IS militants. He stressed that the aids have changed the balance of power in the fighting. President Barzani said that IS is no longer capable of launching attacks due to the air strikes and the fire power of the Peshmarga.
President Barzani continued saying that creating a global coalition to confront IS and terror is the fruit of the serious efforts of France.
He expressed gratitude to France and its efforts to support the Kurds and the Kurdish Peshmarga fighters in the fight against the Islamic State, announcing that: “France has confirmed its true friendship with the Kurds again.”
Hollande's plane was carrying 15 tons of humanitarian aid to be delivered in the Kurdish capital of Erbil later on Friday.
On his part, Hollande stated that French consulate has increased granting visa to the Kurdish people. Regarding the humanitarian aids, President Hollande said that his country will keep sending the aids to the IDP. He stated that he heard from the IDP that they would like to go back to their places of origin.
President Holland expressed his amazement for the capability of the Peshmarga forces in the fight against IS, adding: “Peshmarga has been able to obtain benefit from the military aids and the balance has changed at the moment.” He stressed that the military aids have to be increased in the future.
President Holland said that a delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government will participate in the upcoming international conference in Paris which will discuss the mechanism of how to fight the IS collectively.
