Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani met with the new UK Ambassador to Iraq, Frank Baker, in Erbil on Sept 23. The President and the UK Ambassador exchanged views on the fight against the ISIS terrorists, both in Iraq and Syrian, particularly the efforts by the Peshmerga forces and the coalition air strikes that have started targeting ISIS positions in Syria.

They both agreed that there should be no safe haven for ISIS terrorists neither in Iraq nor in Syria. They also emphasized that military confrontation is not enough, and that political and other means must also be pursued to defeating the terrorists.

President Barzani said that a distinction must be made between individuals and groups, between those who have supported ISIS and committed crimes and others who only happened to reside in areas taken by ISIS and are innocent.

The next day, President Barzani met with South Korean ambassador to Iraq Joe Johngon. A statement by the presidency of the province said that Barzani, during his meeting with South Korean ambassador to Iraq Joe Johngon and his accompanying delegation expressed his support for the steps of the international coalition about targeting the terrorists inside Syrian territory, noting that the terrorists have used Syrian territory as a base and a springboard for attacks on Kurdistan and Iraq, and that the destruction of this base gives a strong impetus to accelerate defeating them.

Barzani said that the terrorists are defeated at the hands of the Peshmerga forces, stressing that terrorism is a global threat, so defeating them requires a joint international effort.

For his part, the South Korean Ambassador said Korean companies are willing to expand their investments in the Kurdistan region, and that the diplomatic office of South Korea in Erbil will continue in the performance of its work to develop bilateral relations, praising the role of the Peshmerga forces in the war against terrorists, pointing out that his country supports the regional Government in its fight against them and helping the displaced people
