“The Kurdish people are going through a sensitive stage; we currently need to be united more than any other time since the recent threat is not against one specific party or in one place, but it is against the Kurdish nation as a whole," said Barzani.

On October 14, Masoud Barzani met with representatives of both Kurdistan National Council (KNC) and People’s Council of Western Kurdistan [Syrian Kurdistan], (PCWK), which is led by the main Kurdish party in Syrian Kurdistan, Democratic Union Party (PYD), with the aim of coming closer and showing a united front in the fight against the Islamic State (IS).

“The Kurdish people are going through a sensitive stage; we currently need to be united more than any other time since the recent threat is not against one specific party or in one place, but it is against the Kurdish nation as a whole," said Barzani.

The President regarded the international support for the Kurdish people as a golden opportunity and said that Kurds are the only force that is fighting against the Islamic State on the ground at the moment.

“The Islamic State has been able to destroy two countries’ armies, but it has been defeated by the Kurdish Peshmarga forces. So, it is very important for us as Kurds to show that we are united and disregard all our differences. Kurdish victory in any place is a success for all Kurdish people everywhere. The strong defense in Kobani should be appreciated by all us all. For me there is no dif- ference between Erbil and Kobani. Until now, we have done whatever we have been able to do for Kobani,” noted Barzani.

The members of the two councils considered the meeting as a positive one and they showed will- ingness to get closer and work together and open a new page in their relations.

Mustafa Mashayekh, senior official of Kurdistan Democratic Party in Syria (KDP-S) said that KNC has promised Bar- zani they are willing to sign agreement with PYD and work with (PCWK) in Syrian Kurdistan.

“In the meeting we asked PYD to review their Canton policies so that other parties can participate in the decision makings in those Cantons in the future," said Mustafa.

Mashayekh also said that during the meeting, Barzani called on all the parties to be united and promised them that KRG will fully support them in any decision they take in Syrian Kurdistan.

Furthermore, the leader of Democratic Union Party (PYD), Salih Muslim, appreciated Barzani for his crucial standpoint toward Syarian Kurdistan. Muslim also agreed with Barzani’s views regarding bringing all the political parties closer together and the unification of all forces in Syrian Kurdistan as well.

“The Kurdish people are going through a sensitive stage; we currently need to be united more than any other time since the recent threat is not against one specific party or in one place, but it is against the Kurdish nation as a whole," said Barzani.
