President Barzani: ISIS only defeated by Peshmarga

The Kurdish Globe - - NEWS -

Kurdistan Region President, Masoud Barzani received a United States government delegation headed by Mr. Tony Blinken, Deputy National Security Advisor. During the meeting President Barzani briefed the delegation with the latest development regarding the ongoing conflict with the terrorists of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS and elaborated on the advanced of the Peshmerga forces on a number of fronts against ISIS.

President Barzani also stated that the ISIS terrorist group is not a new phenomenon; rather it is a continuation of the previous attempts by al-Qaeda and other related terrorist groups in Iraq.

“If the was a solution for the areas where Sunnis based, ISIS would grow big. It was the wrong policy of the former Iraqi Prime Minister that made Sunni people think of ISIS as librating forces,”

Barzani also attributed Peshmarga’s defeat against ISIS group at first to big number of weapons left by Iraqi armies for ISIS. He said Peshmarga is currently is moving forward and is trying to control all the invaded areas. “ISIS has been defeated only by Peshmarga forces; no forces can stand against ISIS in the other areas,” noted Barzani

Barzani believes military actions are not the only solution for destroying ISIS, but their financial sources have to be dried up and terrorists from outside need to be prevented from entering ISIS in Iraq.

Mr. Blinken, on his part expressed his continued support on behalf of the government of the United States to the Kurdistan Region in general and its fight against ISIS in particular. Mr. Blinken added that the military cooperation between the United States and the Kurdistan Reion will continue for the sake of eradicating terrorists in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the larger region.

The Iraq political process and the newly formed cabinet were another topic of the discussions. Both sides agreed that the program, which was announced during the formation of the Iraqi cabinet, needs to be implemented on time, and the issues between the Iraqi government and Kurdistan Region should be solved.
