KRG official says 300 people freed from ISIS
In an interview with the Kurdish Khabat Daily, the organ of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Dr. Nouri Othman, special envoy of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Prime Minister for the refugee issues in Duhok, says now there are 860 thousand refugees and displaced persons in Duhok province.
“240 thousand of these are from Sinjar, and the rest are from other cities of Iraq, in addition to a large number of Syrian refugees,” Othman told Khabat Daily. “They have problems in terms of accommodation, food, water and power supply, clothing, healthcare, fuel, education, cleaning etc.”
Othman said the KRG is continuously working on improving their situations and providing their needs as the winter season has already arrived.
“There are still 90 schools where the displaced families are accommodated, but the government is working hard to relocate them to camps, and in the coming days, all the 90 schools will be emptied.”
There are currently around 1.75 million refugees and Internally Displaced Persons IDPs in Kurdistan, a region with only 5.17 million population according to most recent surveys.
KRG has been always complaining that the Central Government has not been supporting KRG in managing this huge number of refugees during these financial difficulties the region is going through.
“Unfortunately the Iraqi Government is not supporting Kurdistan Region at all as if these people are not Iraqi nationals.”
“KRG has spent approximately IQD 45 billion (USD 35 million) for the refugees till now, and we need another IQD 50 billion to provide required aid to the displaced people during the coming three months of winter.”
Othman told Khabat that a number of the IDPs from Zummar have returned to their homes after the area was liberated from ISIS again.
Regarding the people kidnapped by ISIS, the KRG official said, «Till now we have freed more than 300 people, which has been achieved with the help of the local people."
