President Barzani receives US Chief of Staff of Army General Odierno following KRG officials’ visit to Washington
On November 25, Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani welcomed Chief of Staff of the United States Army, General Raymond Odierno, who is visiting to assess firsthand the status of the fight against ISIS terrorists and the cooperation between the Peshmerga, the coalition forces and the Iraqi army.
General Odierno commended the bravery of the Peshmerga forces and expressed his condolences for the fallen martyrs. He stated that the United States would continue its support for the Kurdish forces and Iraq in the fight against ISIS terrorists, adding that it would also work to further streamline its support and coordination with the Peshmerga.
President Barzani said that defeating ISIS terrorists needs a joint effort and that in parallel to the military effort there is also need for a realistic political and security solution in the country.
The two sides discussed the requirements of the Peshmerga forces and ways of bolstering cooperation and coordination among the Peshmerga, the Iraqi security forces and the coalition.
Earlier this month, several senior Kurdistan Regional Government officials paid a visit to Washington aiming at gaining more supports for Kurdistan Region. The four-day visit culminated in the introduction of a draft to Congress that would authorize the US Government to supply military equipment, weapons, and training directly to Kurdish Peshmerga forces.
Fuad Hussein, Chief of Staff to President Masoud Barzani, and Minister Falah Mustafa, Head of the Department of Foreign Relations, concluded their visit to Washington last Thursday with meetings with senior US administration officials and members of the Congress. Throughout the week the delegation had conducted numerous meetings with members of the Congress and was pleased to see the bill introduced to the House Foreign Affairs Committee on the last day of their visit.
Commenting on the visit, Hussein said, “We applaud Congress on the introduction of this historic bill, which not only demonstrates American commitment to fighting terrorism, but reaffirms the longstanding alliance between the US and people of the Kurdistan.”
