U.S. Ambassador visits Sulaimaniyah
On December 2, 2014 U.S. Ambassador Stuart Jones visited Sulaimaniyah. The Ambassador made a courtesy visit to former Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and met with Kurdish leaders including: IKR Vice President Kosrat Rasul; Sulaimaniyah Acting Governor Bahroz Hama Salih; Gorran Movement General Coordinator Nawshirwan Mustafa; and former KRG Prime Minister Barham Salih.
During his courtesy call, Ambassador Jones recognized President Talabani’s important role in the Iraqi political process and wished him good health.
In other meetings, Ambassador Jones discussed coalition efforts to defeat ISIL and the KRG’s engagement in Iraq’s political process. The Ambassador commended KRG offi- cials for their coordination with the Government of Iraq and coalition members in the fight against ISIL; praised Peshmerga forces’ recent successes, including the liberation of Jalawla; and expressed condolences for the loss of Peshmerga fighters on behalf of the American people.
Ambassador Jones welcomed the KRG delegation’s visit to Baghdad this week and called it another positive step, saying, “All Iraqis need to stand together, now more than ever, as they confront the threat of ISIL. I’m glad to see commitment on the part of the KRG and the Government of Iraq to reach agreements on outstanding issues through dialogue and constitutional mechanisms.”
