U.S. Am­bas­sador vis­its Su­laimaniyah

On De­cem­ber 2, 2014 U.S. Am­bas­sador Stu­art Jones vis­ited Su­laimaniyah. The Am­bas­sador made a cour­tesy visit to for­mer Iraqi Pres­i­dent Jalal Tal­a­bani and met with Kur­dish lead­ers in­clud­ing: IKR Vice Pres­i­dent Kos­rat Ra­sul; Su­laimaniyah Act­ing Gov­er­nor Bahroz Hama Salih; Gor­ran Move­ment Gen­eral Co­or­di­na­tor Naw­shir­wan Mustafa; and for­mer KRG Prime Min­is­ter Barham Salih.

Dur­ing his cour­tesy call, Am­bas­sador Jones rec­og­nized Pres­i­dent Tal­a­bani’s im­por­tant role in the Iraqi po­lit­i­cal process and wished him good health.

In other meet­ings, Am­bas­sador Jones dis­cussed coali­tion ef­forts to de­feat ISIL and the KRG’s en­gage­ment in Iraq’s po­lit­i­cal process. The Am­bas­sador com­mended KRG offi- cials for their co­or­di­na­tion with the Gov­ern­ment of Iraq and coali­tion mem­bers in the fight against ISIL; praised Pesh­merga forces’ re­cent suc­cesses, in­clud­ing the lib­er­a­tion of Jalawla; and ex­pressed con­do­lences for the loss of Pesh­merga fight­ers on be­half of the Amer­i­can peo­ple.

Am­bas­sador Jones wel­comed the KRG del­e­ga­tion’s visit to Bagh­dad this week and called it another pos­i­tive step, say­ing, “All Iraqis need to stand to­gether, now more than ever, as they con­front the threat of ISIL. I’m glad to see com­mit­ment on the part of the KRG and the Gov­ern­ment of Iraq to reach agree­ments on out­stand­ing is­sues through di­a­logue and con­sti­tu­tional mech­a­nisms.”
