UK to further support Peshmarga Forces
PM Nechirvan Barzani receives British Government’s Security Envoy
The Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister, Nechirvan Barzani, on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, received the British Government's Security Envoy to Kurdistan Region, Lieutenant General Sir Simon Mayall, and his accompanying delegation, which included the British Consul to Kurdistan Region Angus McKee and a number of British military officers.
Lieutenant General Mayall said that the aim of his visit is to acquire a better understand- ing of the latest military developments at the fronts and also assess the Peshmarga forces’ needs and training programs provided by the United Kingdom. He described the recent victories that the Peshmarga forces have achieved, particularly in Sinjar and the surrounding areas, as very significant in the fight against the Islamic State terrorist organization.
General Mayall also demanded that the KRG Ministry of Peshmarga Affairs prepare a list of its military needs for the British relevant authorities to examine it and assist the Peshmarga forces accordingly.
Prime Minister Barzani expressed his gratitude to the British government, which is a leading member of the international coalition against ISIS. He reiterated that the British military assistance, particularly training the Peshmarga forces, has been of great assistance. He expressed his hope that the British government’s support to the Kurdistan Region will continue.
