Following the liberation of the Rojawa Kurdish city of Kobani, the President of the Kurdistan Region released a statement on January 27 in which he congratulated the Kurdish fighters of the YPG/YPJ, supported by the Peshmerga and the countries involved in the coalition air strikes.

“I congratulate the Kurdish people for this success. This is a significant success for all Kurds and it is the success of humanity against these inhuman terrorists,” read the statement.

Barzani states his admiration for the heroism displayed by the combined ground forces in clearing the city of Islamic State militants.

“We must thank the US-led coalition that played a major role by providing air support. I also thank Turkey for allowing the Peshmerga to cross the country and arrive in Kobani in order to support Kurdish fighters in the city,” said Barzani.

Barzani said that losing control of some neighborhoods, villages and towns is not a defeat; defeat is when the resistance of the people fails. Kobani is today in the hands of the Kurds because of their unceasing resistance.

The Kurdish President said that he is sure that the support of Kurdish people, the help of Kurdish allies and the resistance of Kobani will inspire the majority of Kurdish people in the fight against the terrorists.

“The sacrifices made by people in the 133 day siege are both honorable and heroic. The unity of purpose displayed by Kurds has liberated the city,” he concluded.
