The Spokesman of the Ministry of Peshmarga and its Secretary General , Lieutenant General, Jabbar Yawar has announced on Wednesday, that nearly six thousand members of the Kurdish Peshmarga forces were casualties since the outbreak of the war against Islamic State group IS militants on June 10, 2014.

Yawar said at a news conference in Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan Region that “The latest statistics of the Ministry refers to “the martyrdom of 999 elements of Peshmarga while 4596 others were injured.”

“The ministry will do what it can” to assist families of the dead or wounded Peshmarga, and praised the high morale of Kurdish forces, Yawar said.

“Our brave Peshmarga forces have shown respect for human rights and dignity, even in the battlefields, and respected international conventions of warfare,” Yawar said in response to a question about online images of dead ISIS fighters being dragged through the streets of Kirkuk.

“These incidents are in no way representative of the Peshmarga ethics and we will thoroughly investigate any military misconduct and punish the violators,” Yawar said.

About the National Guard Law, passed by the Federal Cabinet Tuesday Yawar said that the law “does not include Kurdistan Region,” pointing that “it has been rejected by Kirkuk provincial Council also”.

The President of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan Region, Massoud Barzani, announced that the Kurdish Peshmarga forces had killed approximately 3,000 Islamic State group IS militants.

In an interview with the London-based Hayat Magazine, Barzani said, “800 Peshmarga were killed. Of those, 300 were officers, two of them were major generals, and ten were brigadiers.”

Peshmarga forces continue their fight to retake I-Sheld territories in the north of the country, with clashes near the city of Kirkuk having intensified since IS launched an attack in the area last Friday.

Last month, after Kurdish leaders were denied an invitation to an anti-IS conference in London by the international coalition involved in fighting the militants, Barzani lamented that Kurdish sacrifices were not adequately recognized by the world.

”It is unfortunate that the people of Kurdistan make the sacrifice and the credit goes to others,” he said about Kurdistan’s absence at the meeting.
