Romeo Hakari who heads the BWT- Mahrain Democratic Party, an Assyrian Christian ethnic political party, stated that President of Kurdistan Region, Masoud Barzani made a historical decision for Christians to form a special Christian armed force in order to protect the Christians and their areas. The force is expected to finish training this week.

Hakari thinks that the decision indicates that Brazani is loyal to all nations, and shows that he cares about protecting all minorities within the Kurdistan Region.

“Barzani has always been giving comfort to all the nations. We rely on him since he has kept our rights and the rights of all the other nations,” noted Hakari.

The idea of forming a special force for Christians, according to Hakari, was made after the Islamic State (IS) groups attacked the Christian areas in Nineveh last year and as a result many people were killed or displaced to the Kurdistan Region.

“After the IS attacks, we realized that we needed to have our own force to retake the occupied areas. Barzani and Peshmerga Ministry were helpful in sending hundreds of volunteers to training camps. The training will be finished this week and the base of the force will be in Talasqof.” He said.
