Ban Ki-moon hails Peshmerga progresses
UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon has praised Peshmerga advances against the Islamic State (IS) militants near Mosul frontline.
In a statement, Mr. Ki-moon said that the Peshmerga have managed to recapture some strategic areas lying on Iraqi-Syrian border and an oil refinery, which was an important financial resource for the IS.
The General Secretary called on the international community to send humanitarian and military aid to Iraq including the newly liberated areas, and he also appealed for the initiation of a national reconciliation process.
He described Peshmerga’s recent advances as “quite important”.
Until now the Peshmerga forces have liberated Zummar, Shingal Mount, Rabia, Mosul Dam, and Ain Zala oil field and they are now only 15 km away from the center of Mosul itself.
