Ban Ki-Moon hails Pesh­merga suc­cesses

United Na­tions Sec­re­tary Gen­eral Ban Ki-Moon on Mon­day spoke with the Kur­dis­tan Re­gion Pres­i­dent Mas­soud Barzani over the phone. In the call, he praised the re­cent suc­cesses of the Pesh­merga against the Is­lamic State.

The UN Chief told Pres­i­dent Barzani that he wished to visit the Kur­dis­tan Re­gion, but time con­straints pre­vented him from mak­ing the trip dur­ing this visit to Iraq.

As well as ac­knowl­edg­ing the Pesh­merga’s suc­cesses, Ban ex­pressed his con­do­lences to all fam­i­lies who have lost loved ones in the fight against the IS.

He thanked the Kur­dis­tan Re­gional Gov­ern­ment and Kur­dish peo­ple for help­ing the hun­dreds of thou­sands of refugees by pro­vid­ing them with a safe heaven, and promised that the UN will con­tinue to sup­port the KRG in its hu­man­i­tar­ian ef­forts.

Fur­ther­more, Ban ex­pressed his hap­pi­ness re­gard­ing re­cent de­vel­op­ments and progress in ne­go­ti­a­tions be­tween the Iraqi cen­tral gov­ern­ment and the Kur­dis­tan gov­ern­ment.

The UN Sec­re­tary Gen­eral ar­rived in Bagh­dad last week. He met with se­nior Iraqi of­fi­cials in­clud­ing the Prime Min­is­ter Haider al-Abadi, the Iraqi Pres­i­dent Fuad Maa­sum, the Par­lia­ment Speaker Salim al-Juburi and the For­eign Min­is­ter Ibrahim al-Jaa­fari.
