Ban Ki-Moon hails Peshmerga successes
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on Monday spoke with the Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani over the phone. In the call, he praised the recent successes of the Peshmerga against the Islamic State.
The UN Chief told President Barzani that he wished to visit the Kurdistan Region, but time constraints prevented him from making the trip during this visit to Iraq.
As well as acknowledging the Peshmerga’s successes, Ban expressed his condolences to all families who have lost loved ones in the fight against the IS.
He thanked the Kurdistan Regional Government and Kurdish people for helping the hundreds of thousands of refugees by providing them with a safe heaven, and promised that the UN will continue to support the KRG in its humanitarian efforts.
Furthermore, Ban expressed his happiness regarding recent developments and progress in negotiations between the Iraqi central government and the Kurdistan government.
The UN Secretary General arrived in Baghdad last week. He met with senior Iraqi officials including the Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, the Iraqi President Fuad Maasum, the Parliament Speaker Salim al-Juburi and the Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari.
