President Barzani: Creating forces outside Peshmerga Ministry disallowed
The Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani has sent a letter to the Kurdistan Parliament as a response to a PUK bloc compliant regarding the arrest of Yazidi commander Haider Shasho.
The letter addresses the arrest of the head of the Shingal Protection Units (HPS), saying that the Kurdish government won’t allow the formation of any militia groups outside the authority of the Ministry of Peshmerga.
“The arrest of Shasho is not related to political issues and it’s not related to the KDP. KRG security and stability and the unity of the Kurdish people force us to make sure that all forces are under the authority of the Peshmerga Ministry,” said Barzani in the letter.
Earlier this week, the Shingal Protection Units (HPS) media wing claimed that Kurdish security forces in Khanke, Dohuk Province, had arrested its Supreme Commander Haider Shasho.
Shasho confirmed to BasNews in February that he was receiving financial aid from Baghdad government to create a militia group known as “Hashd al-Shaabi” in Sinjar area in Kurdistan.
“The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leadership was informed about the Shasho arrest and we have documents that prove that this group received money to create the force,” added Barzani.
Barzani reveals in the letter that after Peshmerga forces broke the siege of Mount Sinjar, he asked the Peshmerga Ministry to re-organize all military groups in the area so that they all work under the Peshmerga Ministry. However, Shasho ignored the order and accepted money from elsewhere to form an illegal force, thus, challenging the Kurdistan Region establishment.
