Masrour Barzani: Mosul residents need to lead liberation of the city
Peshmerga have won the hearts and minds of residents in liberated areas
The Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council met with the Governor of Mosul Atheel Nujaifi in Erbil on Sunday, April 5th, and discussed the expected operation to liberate the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.
Nujaifi praised the Peshmerga for sacrificing their lives in fighting Islamic State (IS) and liberating a large area, saying they have won the hearts and minds of the residents with their good conduct.
He also said that the Peshmerga’s admirable behavior has delivered a hopeful message to the people of Mosul for the post-IS future.
Commenting on the urgency of liberating the city, Chancellor Masrour Barzani emphasized that the people of Mosul must play the main part in the operation to liberate the city.
“We must have a plan for the situation after freeing Mosul, primarily to pro- tect innocent civilians.”
Nujaifi suggested that they must develop a strong administration in Mosul by coordinating with the Kurdistan Regional Government closely.
After the liberation of Tikrit in Salahaddin Province, north of Baghdad, by the Iraqi army and Shiite militia groups last week, operations are expected to push the insurgents back from Mosul as well, which fell to IS militants last June.
