Czech Republic ready to expand bilateral relations with KRG
President Barzani met with Prime Minister of Czech Republic Bohuslav Sobotka, President Miloš Zeman and other senior Czech government officials in Prague
Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani met with the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Bohuslav Sobotka in Prague on May 12 to discuss strengthening bilateral ties, in particular support to the peshmerga forces in the fight against ISIS terrorists.
The Czech Prime Minister stated that his country would continue to provide support to the Kurdistan Region and its peshmerga force in the fight against terrorism. He also expressed his country’s readiness to expand bilateral relations with the Kurdistan Region in other fields.
President Barzani and Prime Minister Sobotka also discussed the political and security developments in Iraq and the future of the Kurdistan Region.
After arriving in Prague on Monday, the President and his accompanying KRG delegation also met with the President Miloš Zeman and other senior Czech government officials.
At the beginning of the one-hour meeting that included lunch, Zeman welcomed Barzani to Prague as "a hero of Kurdistan."
Over the past few months, Kurdish fighters have managed to halt the offensive of radicals from Islamic State (ISIS) in northern Iraq and pushed them from some areas they had controlled.
Zeman discussed the fights against ISIS with Barzani. Zeman has long supported hard steps against Islamist terrorism and pushed for an international attack on the radicals' training centers.
Last year, the Czech government donated redundant ammunition worth 41 million Kč to the Kurdish militias fighting Islamists in Iraq. They received 10 million rounds of ammunition for Kalashnikov assault rifles, 8 million rounds for machine guns, 5,000 for bazookas and 5,000 hand grenades.
Barzani and the KRG delegation were also to visit Czech Defense Ministry and to meet with Deputy Defense Minister. KRG delegation appreciated Czech's military supports to Kurdish peshmerga.
Barzani was accompanied in his visit by the advisor of Security Council of Kurdistan Region, Masror Barzani , the Minister of Peshmarga, Mustafa Sayid Qadir, President of Kurdistan Region’s Presidency office , Fouad Hus- sein, Minister of Construction , Derbaz Rasool and Foreign Relations Department official in Kurdistan Regional Government , Falah Mustafa.
