Pres­i­dent Barzani: KRG wouldn’t hes­i­tate to sup­port Chris­tians

The Assyr­ian Church of the East de­cides to make Er­bil the seat of their head­quar­ters

Kur­dis­tan Re­gion Pres­i­dent, Ma­soud Barzani, re­ceived a del­e­ga­tion from the Assyr­ian Church of the East in Er­bil on June 9. Barzani and the del­e­ga­tion dis­cussed the sit­u­a­tion of Chris­tians in Kur­dis­tan, es­pe­cially the plight of IDPs who have sought refuge in Kur­dis­tan.

The del­e­ga­tion ex­pressed their grat­i­tude to Pres­i­dent Barzani and the Kur­dis­tan Re­gional Gov­ern­ment (KRG) for pro­vid­ing pro­tec­tion and a refuge to the Chris­tians IDPs who have fled vi­o­lence from other parts of Iraq.

They also an­nounced that they would con­vene in Er­bil in Septem­ber to elect a new Pa­tri­arch for their Church, and Er­bil would be­come the seat of their Church from now.

Pres­i­dent Barzani said the KRG would not wa­ver in its sup­port to the Chris­tians and other mi­nori­ties as it has done in the past. He also wel­comed the de­ci­sion by the Assyr­ian Church of the East to make Er­bil the seat of their head­quar­ters.
