Italy vows to con­tinue its sup­port for Kur­dis­tan

Pres­i­dent of Kur­dis­tan Re­gion, Ma­soud Barzani, re­ceived Italy>s Am­bas­sador to Iraq, Mr. Marco Car­ne­los, and an ac­com­pa­ny­ing del­e­ga­tion in Er­bil on July 6. Dur­ing the meet­ing Pres­i­dent Barzani and the Am­bas­sador Car­ne­los dis­cussed the latest se­cu­rity and hu­man­i­tar­ian is­sues, es­pe­cially with re­gard to the IDPs from other parts of Iraq who have found a safe refuge in the Kur­dis­tan Re­gion. The two sides also spoke of the dan­ger of the com­mon en­emy, the ter­ror­ists of the Is­lamic State (IS) who were de­scribed by the Am­bas­sador as «en­e­mies of civ­i­liza­tion.»

Pres­i­dent Barzani ex­pressed his ap­pre­ci­a­tion for the role of Italy and other coali­tion al­lies who have sup­ported Kur­dis­tan in its war against the IS.

Am­bas­sador Car­ne­los stated that Italy is fully com­mit­ted to con­tinue its sup­port for the Kur­dis­tan Re­gion and ex­pressed his grat­i­tude for the role of the Kur­dis­tan Re­gion in not only fight­ing and de­feat­ing the ter­ror­ists, but also prov­ing a safe haven for an over­whelm­ing num­ber of IDPs from the rest of Iraq. The Am­bas­sador also men­tioned that in the very near fu­ture Italy would be­gin the open­ing of its Gen­eral Con­sulate in Er­bil.
