PM Barzani: Over Two Thou­sand Yazidis Res­cued From IS

Scores of Kur­dish Yazidi bod­ies, vic­tims of the Is­lamic State (IS) ex­e­cu­tions which were dis­cov­ered in three mass graves, have been buried in a cer­e­mony on Thurs­day Au­gust 13th.

The Kur­dis­tan Re­gion Prime Min­is­ter Nechir­van Barzani at­tended the somber event.

Ad­dress­ing the at­ten­dees, PM Barzani said that the vic­tims had been killed for two sim­ple rea­sons – be­cause they were Kurds and Yazidis.

The 67 civil­ians were killed by the ji­hadists dur­ing the IS mas­sacre in Sin­jar last year. A to­tal of 12 mass graves have so far been dis­cov­ered by the Kur­dish Pesh­merga forces.

PM Barzani said that the en­emy has wounded peo­ple’s souls by killing their loved ones. “But Kurds are still alive,” he stressed.

He re­vealed that up to 2,058 Yazidis have so far been res­cued from the IS, and promised to con­tinue try­ing to save those who are still suf­fer­ing un­der the ex­trem­ists’ rule.

Com­ment­ing on Yazidis mi­grat­ing to Europe, Barzani said that Yazidi re­li­gion and cul­ture is ir­re­vo­ca­bly con­nected to Sin­jar, on their fore­fa­thers’ land.

With Mus­lim, Chris­tian and Yazidi re­li­gious lead­ers at­tend­ing the cer­e­mony, PM Barzani said that the spirit of co­ex­is­tence gives all the power to go on.
