Barzani, Gen. Austin discuss fighting terrorism
President Masoud Barzani received a military and diplomatic delegation from the United States headed by General Lloyd Austin, the commander of U.S. Central Command. U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Mr. Stuart Jones, and other US officials also attended the meeting. President Barzani and General Austin reviewed the latest military operations against the ISIS terrorists in Ninawa and Anbar provinces.
They stressed the importance of providing for the needs of the peshmerga forces, especially at a time that the KRG is facing a significant financial crisis. General Austin stated that the United States will continue to support the Kurdistan Region in the fight against terrorism.
Last week President Barzani also met with the UK Ambassador to Iraq, Mr. Frank Baker. The President and the UK Ambassador shared views on the economic crisis facing the KRG, the military campaign against ISIS, and the political situation in Iraq.
Ambassador Baker offered his country’s readiness to advice the KRG in its efforts to tackle the economic crisis. The President thanked the Ambassador and welcomed any assistance the UK could provide. He added that he has called on the KRG to urgently undertake measures to address the economic and financial crises in the Region.
Speaking on the military campaign against ISIS, the President said that the peshmerga forces are ready and will support the Iraqi Army in retaking the city of Mosul from ISIS terrorists.
