Gas pipe­line ex­plodes overnight near Kirkuk

A gas pipe­line ex­ploded overnight caus­ing a large fire in Sh­wan district near the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, po­lice sources said.

Head of Kirkuk’s Gen­eral Po­lice Di­rec­torate Sarhad Qader said there were no ca­su­al­ties as a re­sult of the blast and that au­thor­i­ties were search­ing for sus­pects.

“We do not have in­for­ma­tion about who was be­hind this, be­cause the ex­plo­sion oc­curred at night,” Qader said.

Me­dia chan­nels ob­tained video of the ex­plo­sion from a wit­ness which showed a fire in the area where the pipe­line is said to be lo­cated.

The in­te­rior min­istry is­sued a state­ment say­ing an in­ves­ti­ga­tion is un­der­way to de­ter­mine the cause of the blast and that the find­ings would be re­leased to the pub­lic.
