Political Parties Support Independence Referendum
The Communist Party of Kurdistan-Iraq has pledged its full support for any future referendum on Kurdish independence, saying that the ground is provided.
Baba Ali Jabbari, a spokesperson for the party, said that his party will support Kurdistan Regional President Massoud Barzani’s plan for an independence referendum.
Jabbari insists that the political borders are be- ing affected by the on-going crisis in the region, and Iraq is essentially not a united country any longer.
Jabbari said that the Kurdish political parties must put aside their disputes and they should give priority to the national interests.
Referring to Barzani’s latest statement, Jabbari pointed out that no country will grant us with independence, “We [Kurds] must work for the case by ourselves,” he added.
Moreover, Kurdistan Islamic Group and Kurdistan Islamic Movement have both expressed their support for the independence referendum.
Head of the Turkmen Development bloc in the Kurdistan Region parliament has supported an anticipated referendum on Kurdish independence, saying that the approach will also be in favor of minorities living in the Kurdistan Region.
Turkmen Development Party in the Kurdistan Region has officially announced that they will be supporting an independence referendum “as it serves the interests of other minorities living in the region.”
MP Mona Qahwachi said that her party will support president Barzani’s plan for an independence referendum “because every nation has the right to determine its future.”
She believes that now is an ideal situation to hold referendum on the Kurdistan Region’s independence, and it can serve the interests of other minorities in the region along with the Kurds.
Qahwachi argues that since the Iraqi central government has failed to provide Erbil’s share from the federal budget for over two years, and it rejects to supply military equipment to the Peshmerga forces, the international community should support the Kurdish independence.
Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani has recently urged the Kurdish political parties to work on the independence referendum in the near future as the self-determination is an undeniable right of the Kurds.
