Barzani: Sykes-Picot brought miserable periods for Kurds
The on-going tensions in Turkey between Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) guerrillas and the Turkish forces have deeply concerned the people of Turkey, therefore, they have hopes in Masoud Barzani, the Kurdistan Region President, to act as an intermediary between PKK and Turkey and bring them back to the negotiation table.
Barzani has always been, as an influential figure, playing a significant role in the Peace Process in Turkey and is trusted by all sides to be officially invited to mediate between the conflicting sides in Turkey.
Barzani was invited by Turkey's President Receb Tayip Erdogan in 2013 to attend an event in Diyarbakir organized to promote peace between Kurds and Turkey, where he called on the Kurdish and Turkish political sides to settle the issues through negotiation and put an end to the disputes existing between them.
The Peace Process however discontinued when conflicts erupted between Turkish forces and PKK guerrillas in July 2015, and ever since, the clashes are ongoing between the two sides in Kurdish areas of southeastern Turkey which have resulted in the death of over 300 civilians and the displacement of 200,000 others.
The Pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) prefers Barzani's intervention in the situation to put an end to the tensions.
Yazar Ümit Fırat, a Turkish prominent author, believes that Barzani's mediation between PKK and Turkey is important at this moment as the relations between Ankara and Qandil are quite tensed.
Fırat told BasNews that Turkey understands that Barzani is an influential leader who is trusted by Kurds, therefore they highly value his efforts and views.
"Barzani will soon take this initiative and bring back peace and security to the northern Kurdistan [Turkish Kurdistan]” he said.
Adem Geveri, a HDP Member of the Turkish Parliament, told BasNews that Barzani will make sincere efforts in mediating between PKK and Ankara, and HDP spares no efforts to end the disputes in Turkey.
