Chris is mak­ing a big splash

CAR­LOW-BASED Wick­low na­tive swim­mer Chris O’Sul­li­van passed his ‘fi­nal exam’ for his up­com­ing English Chan­nel swim (be­tween Septem­ber 21 and 27) when com­plet­ing his manda­tory six hours sea test off the Wick­low coast on Fri­day.

He was obliged to com­plete the swim un­der the su­per­vi­sion of Chan­nel As­so­ci­a­tion ob­servers and in do­ing so cov­ered ap­prox­i­mately 16 miles.

He was kept com­pany in the wa­ter by friends Fergus ‘Gus’ Cooney (59) and Trevor Woods ( 41); the trio the first ever to swim around Wick­low Head.

Se­nior of the three Gus was ea­ger to be the first to round the head and he en­tered the wa­ter at the 4k mark at The Mur­rough Beach, and when Chris reached the 4k mark Trevor joined Chris in the wa­ter.

When Chris reached Blain­roe Golf Club, Gus climbed into the ac­com­pa­ny­ing boat while Trevor and Chris con­tin­ued the swim to Brit­tas, with Chris the first man to swim around Mizen Head.

How­ever, the tide turned and the swim­mers changed di­rec­tion be­cause of the cur­rent, with Chris go­ing on to com­plete the six hours in the wa­ter.

Chris, who heads for Dover on Septem­ber 21, put up a stroke rate of be­tween 60 and 67 and will down­scale his train­ing from 20k to 18 and re­duc­ing to 10s in the run-up to his big event.
