Chris is making a big splash
CARLOW-BASED Wicklow native swimmer Chris O’Sullivan passed his ‘final exam’ for his upcoming English Channel swim (between September 21 and 27) when completing his mandatory six hours sea test off the Wicklow coast on Friday.
He was obliged to complete the swim under the supervision of Channel Association observers and in doing so covered approximately 16 miles.
He was kept company in the water by friends Fergus ‘Gus’ Cooney (59) and Trevor Woods ( 41); the trio the first ever to swim around Wicklow Head.
Senior of the three Gus was eager to be the first to round the head and he entered the water at the 4k mark at The Murrough Beach, and when Chris reached the 4k mark Trevor joined Chris in the water.
When Chris reached Blainroe Golf Club, Gus climbed into the accompanying boat while Trevor and Chris continued the swim to Brittas, with Chris the first man to swim around Mizen Head.
However, the tide turned and the swimmers changed direction because of the current, with Chris going on to complete the six hours in the water.
Chris, who heads for Dover on September 21, put up a stroke rate of between 60 and 67 and will downscale his training from 20k to 18 and reducing to 10s in the run-up to his big event.
