Arklow start the season on a winning note
ARKLOW STARTED their season with a win at home against New Ross in section B of the South East League on Sunday.
The first-half started slowly for the home side and they trailed the visitors 5-3 at halftime with only a penalty to show for their efforts converted by Mark Van Easbeck.
The game picked up pace in the second-half and Arklow began to show their dominance and strength in the pack with some good running and ball carrying from the back row in particular with Dan Wyeth and Richard Murphy making some decisive breaks followed up by the second row pairing of Kurt Steinbeck and Mark O’Neill.
Pressure from the pack paid off with Arklow powering over from an opposition lineout on their five-metre line when Aidan Louth stole cleanly and put his brother and captain of the Arklow side John Louth through from the ruck that followed. This was converted from Van Easbeck and Arklow continued to pour forward and pressurise the New Ross defence.
Michael Kavanagh and Niall Walsh in the backs showed speed and flair and Arklow were unlucky not to get another try in the dying moments as they ran many penalties in the opponents twenty two.
All in all Arklow were happy with the win, although they will need to start stronger in the coming weeks and build up the momentum to the start of the Leinster League.
