Coolkenno clinch it
Coolkenno 1-13, Valleymount 2-7: A dramatic finish to this Junior C Championship match at Baltinglass on Sunday evening.
NDI JCFC The teams were locked togather with the game deep in injurytime and we had all but settled for a another draw in a grade notorious for draws when Stevie Donoghue struck for the winner.
Coolkenno, who had led for 59 minutes launched one last despairing attack but Conor Doyle’s shot for the winning point dropped short and was well fielded by the very sound goalie Noel Foster. Somehow cornerforward Donoghue managed to dispossess him as he came out to clear and toe-poked the ball to the net. It was the last kick, if you could call it a kick, of the game.
Coolkenno were deserving winners. They were in front by 06 to 0-3 at half-time and looked to be cruising to victory when they were hit by a goal by Shane Geaghegan as the game entered the last quarter.
That score lifted Valleymount and they threw everything into attack. With five minutes to go big midfielder Aidan Miley fired home another goal and the Lakesiders were really back in the game. Then with the game already in added time Ross Farrington sent over the equaliser.
Coolkenno could be live contenders for this title. They have a good defence built around Gavin Doyle; two big mobile midfielders in the Doyle cousins – Conor and Thomas; a dangerous full-forward line led by Mark Farrell with wingers Shane Walker and Minor Ben Jackman also very active.
This was a bad evening for Valleymount. They finished up losing two matches that they could have won with scores deep in injury-time.
