Under-16s complete double
ALL SMILES for Arklow Town’s U-16A team who on Sunday last completed a 2007-08 League and cup double in Newtown with a WDSL U-16 Premier Cup final victory over a gallant Rathnew side.
The Rathnew ‘keeper’s first touch of the ball was to pick it out of the net after a wonderful move by Town saw Jack Tim Murphy slotting home in the first minute. William Flanagan doubled Arklow’s lead in the 12th minute with an unstoppable strike from distance.
Town increased their lead before the half-time break with the lively Keith Armstrong netting, making it 3-0 to the Black and Whites at half-time.
The Arklow side upped the tempo straight from the start of the second-half and further goals seemed inevitable. Indeed, some superb passing down Town’s right flank saw Adam Hanlon sneaking in at the back post to push Arklow four ahead and the quality of that goal was bettered minutes later when Dara Verney finished off a fantastic passage of play, again Arklow utilising space on the right wing.
Clive Crammond added his name to the scoresheet with Town’s sixth, a deserved reward for his industry throughout.
Keith Armstrong netted his second and Town’s seventh in the closing minutes with a superbly placed shot and perhaps it was fitting that Town brought down the final curtain on a wonderfully successful 2007-08 season with the eighth goal of the game, in the last minute, a sweeping move ending with Jack Tim Murphy firing home from close range.
Final score: Arklow Town 8, Rathnew 0.
