Wicklow Council slammed for handling of grants

Bray People - - Council Report -

WICKLOW COUNTY COUNCIL’S handling of the Disabled Person Grants and Essential Repair Grants were heavily criticised at the Bray Town Council meeting last week.

Speaking at the meeting last Tuesday Councillor Pat Vance defended the Governments decision to reduce funding while blaming Wicklow Council for the immediate problem of over allocating grants. ‘ Wicklow County Council have behaved disgracefully in this, not the Government.

The amount of approvals that Wicklow County Council gave out went way over the allocations and now the result is that through a loan of ¤2 million the grants can go ahead,’said Cllr Vance.

A number of people throughout Wicklow who had been allocated the grants were informed recently that they were in jeopardy because of lack of Government funding.

At last week’s Wicklow County Council meeting members agreed that a total of ¤ 2 million be added to the Council’s overdraft of ¤ 20 million to cover all preapproved grants and that new applications would be assessed subject to the new budget.
