Big fall in car sales

THE num­ber of cars sold in Au­gust was al­most 42 per cent down on the same pe­riod last year, the So­ci­ety of the Ir­ish Mo­tor In­dus­try has re­vealed.

A to­tal of 5,252 new car sold in the month com­pared to 8,991 in Au­gust, 2007, while sales for the first 8 months of the year (145,643) were down 16.71% on the same pe­riod in 2007 (174,866).

Light Com­mer­cial Ve­hi­cle reg­is­tra­tions for the first eight months of 2008 (27,302) are down 29.28% on the same pe­riod last year (38,604). Heavy Ve­hi­cle (HGV) reg­is­tra­tions are down 26.52% (3,237) for the year to date to end of Au­gust 2008, com­pared to the same pe­riod in 2007 (4,405).

By the end of the year new car sales are ex­pected to reach around 150,000, a sim­i­lar level to that of 2003 and 2004.
