Big fall in car sales
THE number of cars sold in August was almost 42 per cent down on the same period last year, the Society of the Irish Motor Industry has revealed.
A total of 5,252 new car sold in the month compared to 8,991 in August, 2007, while sales for the first 8 months of the year (145,643) were down 16.71% on the same period in 2007 (174,866).
Light Commercial Vehicle registrations for the first eight months of 2008 (27,302) are down 29.28% on the same period last year (38,604). Heavy Vehicle (HGV) registrations are down 26.52% (3,237) for the year to date to end of August 2008, compared to the same period in 2007 (4,405).
By the end of the year new car sales are expected to reach around 150,000, a similar level to that of 2003 and 2004.
