Wicklow 9, Enniscorthy 3: Wicklow’s 2nd XV recorded their second successive win against a tough Enniscorthy seconds at Ashtown Lane on Sunday. Having hammered a weakened Rathdrum side the previous week by over 75 points to nil Wicklow were keen to continue their good start to the season.

The squad on the day was one of the youngest senior sides ever to start for Wicklow. Enniscorthy were a far more experienced and bigger side but that did not deter the Wicklow lads who tore into them right from the start. The game was played in sweltering conditions which probably suited the younger more mobile Wicklow side.

The pack were under pressure right from the off with the big Enniscorthy eight physically stronger at scrum time. Wicklow led by flying open side Brian Sillery tackled their hearts out and disrupted Enniscorthy at every opportunity. The front row of David Quinn, Eanna Killeen and Anthony Clarke were prominent in the loose as was Paul Hodgkinson who played very well in his first sen- ior start for Wicklow. The backs were marchalled by Chris McWilliams and veteran Paddy Downey who kept the opposition thinking at all times.

In a tight game, try scoring oppor- tunities were few and far between. Eventually Wicklow’s pressure defence paid off and Enniscorthy conceded a penalty close in which was converted by Paddy Downey. Enniscorthy responded well with a penalty of their own.

The score remained at 3-3 until midway through the second-half when Downey added a second penalty following excellent work by Liam Byrne and Paul Hodgkinson. Wicklow led 6-3 and were determined not to concede another score. Wicklow remained on top for the final ten minutes and were rewarded with a penalty out wide which was converted by the excellent Paddy Downey to leave the final score at 9-3 to Wicklow.

This is a side that features many players that will go on to represent Wicklow at first team level for years to come. They have guts and enthusiasm and all they need is a little experience to reach the next level.

Another interesting point to note is that all 16 players in the squad including the four players over 30 are products of the youths system in Wicklow RFC.

With several more experienced players yet to come back into the squad this talented bunch of players could enjoy a fruitful season.
