Arklow suffer heavy defeat in Enniscorthy
Enniscorthy 49, Arklow 18: Arklow started the stronger in their second game in the South East League playing away to Enniscorthy, but they could not maintain the momentum during the second-half.
Michael Kavanagh, Arklow’s out-half kicked two penalties in the opening half which left Arklow trailing by seven points to six at half-time.
Having proved their strength up front, Arklow will kick themselves for the missed chances they threw away in the first-half and it was against the run of play that Enniscorthy got a breakaway try to leave them one point up at the interval.
On one of the few hot Sum- mer’s days, Enniscorthy started to open it up in the second-half and with some fine running from their centres, wingers and fullback, Arklow’s defence fell to pieces allowing six more tries past them in the second-half that were all converted. The first line of defence did not make the crucial tackles as some injuries and replacements had to be introduced.
Arklow did score two tries of their own with one cross kick from Kavanagh which Rob McCormack gathered on the wing and scored in the corner and another one from John Louth following some good forward rucking.
There were also some good breaks by Richard Murphy, Mark O’Neill and Ben Diaper in the second-half and Arklow must now concentrate on the positives, look to shore up their defence and increase fitness levels before the end of the month when they start their Leinster League Division 2 campaign.
