Dignam says that he has been destroyed
NEWSPAPER CLAIMS FORMER GAA BOSS RESPONDS
‘ THIS HAS destroyed me,’ was the response this week of Rathnew man Bobby Dignam Senior to allegations made against him in a national newspaper at the weekend.
The former Chairman of the County Wicklow GAA Board was the focus of the Sunday World’s front page story as well as further stories across pages two, three, four and five, which detailed meetings with an undercover reporter and accused him of ‘dodgy’ financial dealings.
‘I can’t make a comment, but 90 per cent of what was said is totally untrue,’ Mr. Dignam said on Tuesday morning, when asked if he had anything to say.
‘It wasn’t nice to have my business printed in the national papers, especially in the way that it was presented. This has destroyed me out here. When people are printing this stuff, they don’t think of the person’s family,’ he added.
He directly addressed two of the main allegations made against him in the national newspaper: firstly, that he helped a Dublin criminal to secure at least a quarter of a million euro in bank loans, and secondly, that he helped the undercover reporter in applying for a mortgage of ¤350,000 despite being told she was unemployed and had only miniscule savings.
‘In regards to that fellow, I have no connection with him,’ Mr Dignam said, referring to the Dublin man. ‘He came to me over two years ago asking if I could help him out, and I did a mortgage for him. It just turned out that his sister is married to a first cousin of mine.’
With regard to allegations of wrongdoing in mortgage applications, he issued a point blank denial of any wrongdoing.
‘When it comes to forging documents, I have nothing to do with that,’ he said.
He had earlier also told the Sunday World that ‘I most certainly do not forge documents’.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson at Wicklow Garda Station this week said that the allegations against Mr Dignam had been noted, and that the Fraud Squad is aware of them.
The Garda Press Office issued a statement to say that ‘the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation is currently investigating aspects of alleged mortgage fraud.’ However, a spokesperson there would not comment specifically on Mr. Dignam.
