A FULL INVESTIGATION is to be carried out by the Department of Defence into the sinking of the Asgard II.

Minister for Defence, Willie O’Dea T.D. made the announcement late last week when news of the accident broke.

‘The cause of the accident is not yet known and a full investigation will be carried out. It is understood that the weather conditions at the time were moder- ate,’ a spokesperson said in the wake of the sinking.

The Ambassador to France, Ann Anderson travelled to Belle-Ile from Paris to meet with crew and trainees in the wake of their dramatic evacuation.

Fine Gael Spokesperson for Defence, Wicklow TD Billy Timmins, said that considering the nostalgia and historical value of the Asgard to Arklow in particular he hopes to see efforts made to salvage the wreck.

‘If it can be done, I would like to see the Asgard II raised. At the very least I would hope to see every option explored and investigated with a view to this. I appreciate the levels of sadness and nostalgia that prevail in Arklow today. And I hope that every effort will be made to salvage the vessel,’ said the Baltinglass-based Deputy.
