Youngsters step up to do bat­tle as Labour stal­warts Egan and McManus call it a day

BOTH Cllr. Anne Egan and Cllr. John McManus are to re­tire from Bray Town Coun­cil next year, and a num­ber of new faces will be seen on the can­vass­ing cir­cuit af­ter the Labour Party an­nounced their lo­cal elec­tion candidates for 2009.

Ro­nan McManus hopes to take the reigns from his fa­ther, and will run along­side Anne Egan’s daugh­ter Tracy O’Brien in the West Ward of Bray.

Tracy is mar­ried to Kieran (Tarzan) O’Brien, the well known stal­wart of Bray Wan­der­ers, while Ro­nan McManus lives and works in the Lit­tle Bray area.

An­other new­comer, Barry Nevin, was elected to stand along­side Anne Fer­ris in the East Ward of Bray. Barry works with the Dublin Air­port Au­thor­ity and is a mem­ber of SIPTU’s Na­tional Ex­ec­u­tive.

There was unan­i­mous sup­port for sit­ting coun­cil­lors John Byrne and Anne Fer­ris to con­test the Wick­low county Coun­cil next June, while Cllr. Byrne was also cho­sen to run in the new South Ward of Bray.

There were a num­ber of glow­ing tributes at Mon­day night’s se­lec­tion con­ven­tion to Cllrs. Anne Egan and John McManus, who have de­cided to re­tire next year. Every­one agreed that they have served the peo­ple of Bray very well dur­ing the time they held of­fice and their vast ex­pe­ri­ence will be missed on the Town Coun­cil.

Deputy Liz McManus paid trib­ute to all the Coun­cil­lors. ‘It is vi­tal that the Labour Party con­tin­ues to work and fight for the com­mu­nity of North Wick­low,’ she said.
