Youngsters step up to do battle as Labour stalwarts Egan and McManus call it a day
BOTH Cllr. Anne Egan and Cllr. John McManus are to retire from Bray Town Council next year, and a number of new faces will be seen on the canvassing circuit after the Labour Party announced their local election candidates for 2009.
Ronan McManus hopes to take the reigns from his father, and will run alongside Anne Egan’s daughter Tracy O’Brien in the West Ward of Bray.
Tracy is married to Kieran (Tarzan) O’Brien, the well known stalwart of Bray Wanderers, while Ronan McManus lives and works in the Little Bray area.
Another newcomer, Barry Nevin, was elected to stand alongside Anne Ferris in the East Ward of Bray. Barry works with the Dublin Airport Authority and is a member of SIPTU’s National Executive.
There was unanimous support for sitting councillors John Byrne and Anne Ferris to contest the Wicklow county Council next June, while Cllr. Byrne was also chosen to run in the new South Ward of Bray.
There were a number of glowing tributes at Monday night’s selection convention to Cllrs. Anne Egan and John McManus, who have decided to retire next year. Everyone agreed that they have served the people of Bray very well during the time they held office and their vast experience will be missed on the Town Council.
Deputy Liz McManus paid tribute to all the Councillors. ‘It is vital that the Labour Party continues to work and fight for the community of North Wicklow,’ she said.
