Bray get off to perfect start
HOCKEY DIVISION ONE CLASH
Bray 4, Railway Union 1: A mixture of nerves and excitement filled the air in Bray on Saturday as the Ladies first squad took to the field for their first competitive match in Division 1. The Jacqui Potter Cup kicked off on Saturday, the Leinster Senior Cup involving Divisions 1 and 2. Having played Railway II three times last year before their promotion to Division 1, Bray knew that this would be a fast and exciting game. Bray began the stronger side and showed no concern that they were missing six players from their squad. New coach Roy Horsfield has chosen a versatile and experienced side and this was evident against Railway from early in the match. New player to Bray Elaine Bromell put Bray on the scoreboard early in the first-half when a well pushed out penalty corner from Catherine Brock found her stick and Bromell sent a well timed drag flick over the line. Libby Bredin added Bray’s second shortly after from open play. Just before the break Railway were awarded a penalty corner. Known for their well executed set-pieces Railway scored to bring the score to 2-1 at half-time. Bray began the second-half as they began the first, the stronger and faster of the two sides and immediately put their opponents on the back foot. Some excellent work from Bray’s centre midfield Linda O’Neill saw her dodge her way through the Railway defence before passing the ball to another new edition to the Bray side Kate Lyndsey who scored Bray’s third goal. Firmly in control now, Bray dominated the game, moving the ball well around the pitch. Bredin added her second, again from open play, she calmly slipped the ball past the Railway keeper from the centre of the circle. Railway II’s defeated convincingly, Bray now move on to the next round of the Leinster Cup but not before they play Glenanne who were also promoted to Division 1 last season, in their first league match at home on Saturday. All teams, men and women, in Bray Hockey Club begin their league campaigns for the 2008/09 season this Saturday, September 27. For more information, log on to brayhockeyclub.ie.
