Coolboy 2-10, Baltinglass 1-8: Coolboy finished their run in the Junior A football championship with a good win over Baltinglass at Shillelagh on Saturday to lift themselves out of the relegation zone.

JAFC Coolboy got off to the better start and an early goal by Paul O’Keeffe was followed by three good points to seed them go into a lead of 13 to nil. Baltinglass got on top in the second quarter and got the tonic they needed when their Minor corner-forward David Faulkner found the net.

The Slaneysiders led by 1-5 to 1-4 after a very even first-half .

Midfielder Michael Gregan had the sides level almost from the restart. The captain Johnny Willoughby, leading from the back, pointed Coolboy in front and while Kevin Murphy levelled the game once more in was the maroon and white that were now setting the pace. A goal by Paul O’Keeffe midway through the second-half lifted Coolboy and sent them on their way.

The result sees Coolboy finish in third place, just a point short of the qualifying mark.

Baltinglass now join Blessington, St. Patrick’s and Lacken in a relegation play-off.

Coolboy captain Johnny Willoughby wished to thank their trainer Joe Clancy and the selectors for the hard work they put in all year preparing the team.
