14 Wicklow ‘zones’ on speeding hit list
GARDA CRACKDOWN WEBSITE IDENTIFIES TRAPS
WICKLOW roads feature prominently in the new garda crackdown on speeding which will include the use of new speed detection equipment which will detect offending motorists, even in poor visibility or in the middle of the night.
Eight automatic number-plate recognition systems will be in operation throughout the country and the equipment will be contained in mobile garda vehicles.
As well as tracking the speed of motorists, the equipment is compatible with the Garda Pulse information technology system and can immediately check the ownership of vehicles and instantly recognise if they have been reported stolen.
The equipment is to be targeted at zones with the highest crash records and Wicklow roads obviously aren’t considered the safest in the country judging by the amount that feature in the new crackdown.
On national roads two sections of the N11 will be included in the speed enforcement zones. The 7.5 km section from Kilcroney R117 to Barry’s Bridge R762 and the 1 km from Wingfield to Kilmacanogue are both included.
The R761 from Kilruddery to Blacklion, 4 km in all, and the 5km from Greystones to Kilcoole will also be covered.
The rural R117 road from Monastery to Enniskerry will be included as will the 2 km of the R767 from Southern Cross Road in Kilcroney to the Southern Cross Road R761.
Other stretches of Wicklow roads set for inclusion are the R774 Farrenkelly Road and the R117 from Monastery to Enniskerry.
It won’t come as much of a surprise that roads out to the west of Wicklow feature heavily on the list of black spots, with three different sections of the N81 included. Under surveillance will be the 5 km part of the road from Hempstown to Monaspick, 10 km from Burgage to Hollywood Lower and 12 km from Whitestown to Tuckmill.
Staying out west, the R747 from Baltinglass to Kiltegan makes up 10 km and will also be targeted. The same with the R756 from Hollywood to Lockstown Upper.
3.3 km of road from Killaveny Road near Tinahely to Mucklagh will be covered, as will the 2 km part of the R747 from Tinoranhill to Barraderry West.
