The formula for success
F1 CAR PUTS A NEW SPIN ON FUNDRAISING
ST. DAVID’S Secondary School F1 in schools team, the Koni Kats, brought Formula 1 fever to Greystones over the weekend.
As part of their fund-raising bag pack in Tesco, the team had Jenson Button’s Honda Formula 1 racing car on display as their star attraction.
The St. David’s students, Eoin O’Connell, Sean Clery, Conor Daly and Adam Gammell, are the reigning Irish F1 in Schools champions and will be representing Ireland at the World Championships in London in June ’09, which will coincide with the British F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone.
The team is in the process of designing their model F1 car using 3D CAD which they will race against 20 teams from as far away as Australia, South Africa, China and the United States at next year’s competition.
The team uses the same cutting-edge technology to design and manufacture their designs that the real F1 teams use. They must also market their team, raise sponsorship and develop their own graphic identity.
To fund their trip to the World Finals, the team needs to raise aroung ¤15,000, so it was all systems go at the weekend as their fellow students and many of their teachers gave up their free time to help out. The event was a great success, raising almost ¤5,000.
The team has been busy over the summer too, building their own race track for testing their designs during the coming year. The new track will be on display at the school’s open night on Tuesday evening.
If anyone would like to help the lads they can contact the team’s Marketing Manager, Conor Daly, at email@example.com. More information about the project can be found at the team’s website www.konikats.com.
