THE REALITY surrounding the loss of the Asgard II which sunk off the French Coast on September 11 hit home this week when dramatic images of its final moments were released.
The pictures which were captured just minutes before the doomed sail training vessel went out of sight for good were taken by a French customs aircraft.
Although all trainees and crew were quickly removed to safety the ship could not be saved and sunk within five hours.
It is now still unknown if it will be possible to raise the Asgard II of construct a new ship to take over in the area of sail training.
An insurance policy was taken out with company Allianz for over ¤ 3m.
Investigations are still ongoing in to the circumstances surrounding the sinking by both French and Irish authorities.
